F.A.Q
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is it data extraction only, or can I use it for reading and writing to my database?
rFuel:uBulk extracts data for warehousing, in bulk mode. It runs in two modes; (a) FULL extrtacts or (b) INCRemental extracts.
rFuel:uRest provides a real-time data service engine for reading, writing and executing legacy code in your database. -
Which databases do you specialise in?
All rFuel features and functions have been applied to; Rocket's UniVerse and UniData as well as NEC's Reality.
-
Our vendor can get a little touchy, will this breach my NDA or hurt our relationship with them?
Our data mapping technique keeps the intellectual property in these maps in your control. Please do not share them, or be sure to share them only as permitted, inside your peer community. We are not keepers of maps or the IP within them.
-
To extract data, do I have to write dictionaries or run queries into XML or JSON?
NO!
Of course, this is an option but who wants a career writing dictionaries or scaping data out of XML or JSON report dumps? There is no long-term benefit in doing this; it relies heavily on aging knowledge and skills, it places unnecessary strain on the production database. We use a natural text-based mapping technique which reflects your file layouts and can be used by the normalisation engine to work with your data. Now, any developer using any language can work with your data and not know a thing about your database. -
Can we do a Proof of Concept, using our data?
SURE!
We are happy to walk you through a trial use of the platform. Our preference is to run a cloud (AWS) based PoC with you however, if this is unrealistic, let's talk about a PoC project on-premise.
Or, better yet, meet our partner who would be only too happy to show you through the process, personally? Click here. -
How do we get involved in the API marketplace, using our data?
If you have NOT yet created a presence on a platform service such as AWS or Salesforce, this can be a daunting first step.
Please meet our partner who will show you through the process, slowly and personally. Click here.If you ARE already on a platform, drop us an email and let's get you connected very quickly.
-
What will it cost?
Traditional installations on premise carry varying prices.
Cloud enabled as a Service is priced on;
(a) data volume for data extraction and
(b) number of data requests for data interoperability.

We decided to make a strategic shift, not only in technology but more so in culture. Historically, we built everything ourselves
as there were no products to outsource our technical debt. We are a Bank and not a technology company. Our backlog of business
related projects was not getting smaller and we had no realistic way of modernising for efficiency. We were faced with the options
to either; find new technology or replace the entire core banking platform, the costs of which were significant.
We looked for the right product and found many which could "do the job" but left the technical debt with us. We found UniLibre and put their product
(rFuel) through 3 years of extensive trials. At the time, rFuel was new and unproven but it's capabilities balanced the risk of
engaging a start-up with a new product. With nothing to lose and everything to gain, we engaged with Redhat for JBoss and UniLibre
for rFuel and we had the platform on which we could launch our next generation core banking system – and so we began our modernisation
journey.
Initially, the journey was exciting with our staff learning to work in Agile teams using the JBoss suite and rFuel. Our teams
are used to doing things a certain way and wanted rFuel to reflect this but it was not what rFuel was designed for. By working with
UniLibre through these differences, we have seen great improvements in capability, maturity and insights. Now, our development teams
are very happy to work with rFuel and they deliver great results in a contemporary, streamlined and well governed SDLC.
As we close out our second year of using rFuel in our production core banking system, I can truly say that working with UniLibre has been rewarding
and productive. Today, we are delivering software capabilities at speed which benefits our business immediately. Importantly, we no
longer carry the technical debt of developing a database adapter. rFuel has provided us with the technical abstraction and functional
capabilities we needed to achieve our strategic goals. We thank UniLibre for working with us through the periods of growth and change,
and for helping us to arrive at a mutually prosperous outcome.

One of the challenges we have faced in using a UniVerse database is accessing the complex multi-valued data for operational reporting and
strategic decision making. Over the years we’ve tried various approaches, with mixed results. Then in 2014 we found UniLibre and got to
see an early release of rFuel which has since evolved into a serious option for anyone wanting to take ownership of their UniVerse data.
As a bank, we take security and platform stability very seriously and over time our trust and confidence in UniLibre’s software has grown
to the point where we have no hesitation in recommending them to others. The low-level code and corresponding low-level impact of software
designed by people with detailed and intimate knowledge of how UniVerse operates, enables it to run with minimal overhead and consequently
only minimal infrastructure is required. We have proven this night after night for year upon year, pulling growing volumes of data from
production systems and feeding our data warehouse which in turn is used to support powerful, customised business reporting and analytics.
We also align culturally and ethically with UniLibre as an organisation. They have always been open and supportive of our product suggestions,
enhancements and also willingly engage in conversations of a technical and strategic nature. If they believe they can help, they will. Their
desire to build customer communities, where everyone benefits from shared learnings and data assets is admirable and also highly cost-effective
for those who are willing to participate.
Meet our directors

Andy MacDonald
Our founding director started working with Pick databases in 1981. He has deep knowledge of the legacy databases; from Reality, Prime Information
and Ultimate Computers, to UniVerse and UniData.
Andy is passionate about reviving the future of Pick databases. He believes the way forward is to abstract the legacy nuances to make the database
disappear from the register of skillsets which you go hiring for.

Greg Woolley
Greg has created his own IT success story in New Zealand and Australia. Greg joined UniLibre in 2018 when he saw the potential of the product in a
captive and starved marketplace.
Greg is passionate about bringing change and scaling UniLibre into the global market and finding the right relationships for us all to succeed.
Our vision is to see all Pick database customers making great use of their business data.
Our mission is to demolish the technology barriers which prevent Pick database customers from achieving unbelievable outcomes and to provide a reliable platform on which they gain easy access to business information, from any environment.
Our desire is to enable your information strategy by resolving technology challenges with a trustworthy and reliable platform.
